In a crucial move to boost Nigeria’s defense capabilities and achieve self-sufficiency in military equipment production, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Defence. This partnership is expected to lay the foundation for a new Military Industrial Complex (MIC) aimed at producing and maintaining various military hardware domestically.
During the MoU signing ceremony, NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, emphasizing that it represents not only a strategic move but a national necessity in light of global security challenges.
“This initiative will transform Nigeria’s defense industry, ensuring that we can meet the needs of our Armed Forces through local innovation and production,” Halilu remarked. He expressed confidence that NASENI’s expertise in research and manufacturing would play a crucial role in establishing the MIC, which will serve as a hub for developing a wide range of military equipment, from small arms to advanced defense systems.
The agreement is seen as the beginning of a long-term collaboration focused on bolstering Nigeria’s defense capabilities through technological advancements and local manufacturing. Halilu also thanked the Honorable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, and the Ministry for their unwavering support, reiterating NASENI’s commitment to building a robust and self-reliant defense industry.
Key stakeholders, including Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, Minister of Steel Development, and senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Armed Forces, were present to witness the historic signing, marking a pivotal step in Nigeria’s journey towards a more secure and economically independent future.
