Nigeria has emerged as a key supplier of advanced military hardware to several African countries, according to the Federal Government. The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), under the leadership of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration, is at the forefront of this development, as highlighted by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.
Matawalle emphasized that the growing demand for Nigerian-made weapons among African nations is a testament to the Ministry of Defence’s commitment and the revitalization of DICON. He noted that this development could significantly boost Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings, create jobs for skilled Nigerians, and reduce capital flight.
Speaking at a news conference ahead of DICON’s 60th anniversary, Matawalle revealed that over 150 foreign nationals would participate in the first-ever Africa Defence Industries Conference and Exhibition in Abuja. The event, set to start tomorrow and conclude on Thursday, will showcase Nigeria’s capabilities in military manufacturing.
Matawalle addressed the criticisms DICON has faced over the years, particularly regarding the importation of foreign military equipment. He stated, “At 60 years old, many have questioned DICON’s achievements, given our continued reliance on foreign armaments. However, since taking the helm at the Ministry of Defence, we have worked tirelessly to ensure DICON stands on its feet, enhancing its capacity to produce our own armaments and attracting both domestic and international investors.”
He continued, “Today, DICON is a renewed entity, partnering with both government and private sectors in the production of high-tech military hardware. Several African countries now turn to DICON for their arms and ammunition needs, underscoring our growing influence in the defense industry.”
The minister also highlighted the importance of the new DICON Act 2023, which he believes will play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s development and national security. Since its establishment in 1964, DICON has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s defense sector by collaborating with indigenous companies to enhance military manufacturing.
Matawalle recounted DICON’s evolution from producing small arms and ammunition to manufacturing military vehicles, artillery, and other defense equipment. Despite various challenges, DICON has remained committed to self-reliance and national security, making significant strides over its 60-year history.
“DICON’s 60th anniversary is a testament to Nigeria’s dedication to self-reliance in defense production,” Matawalle said. “Through collaboration and innovation, DICON has established itself as a key player in the defense sector. As DICON continues to evolve, its contributions will remain vital to Nigeria’s national security and economic growth.”
He concluded by celebrating DICON’s 60 years of service in producing and repairing military hardware, marking it as a milestone in the corporation’s journey of innovation, resilience, and dedication to meeting the defense needs of the nation.
