Security operatives at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Saturday dispersed protesters and journalists from the facility with gunfire.
The security operatives targeted both protesters and journalists, causing them to run for cover.
The protesters were reconvening after initially being dispersed by security agents deployed to the stadium. Suddenly, masked operatives, suspected to be personnel of the Department of State Services, began shooting sporadically at the protesters.
As a result, the protesters fled into the surrounding bushes, with some of the security operatives pursuing them.
Following this, the remaining masked operatives turned their attention to the journalists who were at a separate spot. As the operatives approached, the journalists scrambled to escape, diving into any available vehicle.
The masked security operatives continued to fire sporadically at the fleeing journalists. Bullets pierced a Premium Times reporter’s car, which was transporting journalists away from the scene, in three different locations.
Journalists inside the car included those from The PUNCH, The Cable, Premium Times, and Peoples Gazette. Additionally, the glass of a commuter vehicle was shattered by bullets.
