Musician Burna Boy has stated that the only veteran artists in Nigerian music he respects are Timaya, D’banj, Wande Coal, Larry Gaaga, and 2Baba, citing their significant influence on his life and career.
In response to producer ID Cabasa’s recent call for Nigerian singers to respect music icons, Burna Boy shared his thoughts during an Instagram live session with fans. He explained, “The only OGs who have impacted my life are Timaya, who showed me that achieving stardom was possible, and D’banj, who supported me and paid for the ‘Wan Da Mo’ video. These are two people I don’t joke with.”
He continued, “It’s not that we don’t have respect; it’s just that we’ve been through a lot and we only remember those who were there during the tough times. Larry Gaaga stood by me back then, so he will always have my respect. When it comes to OGs, as far as I’m concerned, those names, along with 2Baba, who did a feature with me when he didn’t have to, are the only ones I consider OGs.”
Burna Boy also mentioned Wande Coal, saying, “I can’t forget Wande Coal. At one point, we were very close.”
He concluded by acknowledging the different experiences and perspectives each artist brings, underscoring his personal respect for those who had a direct impact on his journey.
