Actor Segun Arinze has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to ensure due process is followed in the prosecution of Governor Yahaya Bello.
Governor Bello, along with his nephew and two others, faces accusations of laundering N80 billion under a 19-count indictment.
Segun Arinze recently criticized the social media trial of Yahaya Bello in a video shared on Instagram, deeming it unnecessary.
In his statement, Segun Arinze highlighted his observations:
“I’ve been closely monitoring the developments surrounding the EFCC and Yahaya Bello saga, and it’s been quite dramatic. Initially, the EFCC made numerous statements on social media and in the news regarding the alleged arrest of Yahaya Bello and the significant amount of funds transferred to his children’s school accounts. While it’s concerning if the funds are proven to be from government sources, it’s crucial to await substantiated evidence.”
“I’m not here to determine Yahaya Bello’s innocence or guilt as I lack detailed information on the matter. However, I’m troubled by the influence of social media. Unless you’ve experienced being dragged on social media, you won’t fully comprehend its impact. The plethora of opinions circulating on social media, fueled by EFCC updates, only breeds negativity for both parties involved.”
“My stance is clear: social media is not a substitute for the Nigerian judiciary. It lacks the authority to make legal decisions. From what I understand, the case is already before the courts. Therefore, my advice is for the EFCC to adhere strictly to due process. Let the legal system run its course. This is my personal opinion.”
