Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo has shared the story of his unexpected path to becoming a professional musician. Known for his hit song “Great Nation,” Dakolo explained that music was initially just a hobby for him, not a career choice.
In a recent appearance on the On The Record podcast, Dakolo revealed that his love for music began with singing in the choir and performing street songs, often written in notebooks to impress girls. Music, he said, was never something he planned to pursue professionally.
It wasn’t until he won the inaugural season of Idols West Africa in 2007 that he decided to take music seriously. Reflecting on the journey, Dakolo stated, “Sometimes you meet your destiny on the road you take to avoid it.”
