Jailbreak: 12 inmates escape from Kogi prison

A prison break occurred at the Federal Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, in the early hours of Monday, with at least 12 inmates escaping through the facility’s tower.
Unlike past incidents involving armed attacks, this escape reportedly took place without structural damage, raising concerns over possible internal sabotage.
While correctional officials have remained silent, the Kogi State government confirmed the incident and called on the federal government to launch a full investigation.
Government Response and Investigation
Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, described the escape as “unfortunate” and assured residents that security agencies are working to recapture the fugitives.
“The theory that inmates escaped through the tower without causing any structural damage raises serious concerns. A thorough investigation is needed to determine the exact circumstances, identify potential saboteurs, and arrest the fleeing inmates,” Fanwo stated.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to collaborate with federal authorities and security agencies to prevent further breaches. The state government has also pledged logistical and operational support to enhance security measures.
Public Vigilance Urged
Fanwo commended the swift response of security forces and urged residents to report any suspicious activity.
“Anyone found harboring an escaped inmate will be held accountable. While investigations continue, we assure the public that there is no cause for panic,” he said, urging citizens to remain calm as authorities tighten security.
Security agencies are now on high alert, with efforts underway to track down the escaped inmates and prevent future incidents.

Fubara distances self from militant groups, explosions

Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, has denied any links to militant groups allegedly threatening the federal government over the ongoing political crisis in the state.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, and released in Port Harcourt on Monday, Fubara expressed concern over attempts to associate him with such groups. He dismissed reports of attacks on oil facilities, stating that affected communities had refuted claims of explosions.
“Virtually all the fake videos have been linked to alleged militant groups in the state, with the creators of such content trying very hard to connect them to supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara,” the statement read.
Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to peace and security, emphasizing that he has no affiliations with any criminal groups. He stressed that governance and development can only thrive in a peaceful environment.
The governor also issued a stern warning against attacks on government infrastructure, urging criminals to stay away from the state. He cautioned bloggers and social media influencers against spreading misinformation that could incite violence.
Fubara called on security agencies to investigate the source of misleading videos and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
