Lawmakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly have arrived at the State High Court in Ikeja for the hearing of a case filed by their colleague and Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, challenging his removal from office.
Obasa was ousted by 36 lawmakers on January 13, 2025, over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. In response, he filed a lawsuit contesting his removal. Among the respondents in the case are the lawmakers and Princess Mojisola Meranda, who was initially elected as his replacement but later stepped down in respect of the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership.
During the last court session on February 20, Obasa was represented by senior lawyer Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), while a team of legal experts, including Femi Falana (SAN) and Muiz Banire (SAN), appeared for the 34 lawmakers. Additional legal representation came from Olu Daramola (SAN) and Dada Awosika (SAN) for other lawmakers seeking to be joined in the case. Meranda was represented by Tayo Oyetibo (SAN) and a team of senior lawyers.
Justice Yetunde Pinheiro had previously ruled that all members of the Lagos Assembly be joined as parties in the suit. The court is now set to hear preliminary objections filed in the case.
