The lawmaker representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC) and declared his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
Jibrin, who left the APC in May 2022, made his return official during a political gathering in his hometown, Kofa, Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State, on Sunday.
Announcing the development on his Facebook page on Monday, the lawmaker said his supporters had unanimously agreed to abandon the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the Kwankwasiyya Movement to align with the ruling APC.
“Today, in a show of solidarity, I was warmly received by thousands of my constituents in my hometown of Kofa, Bebeji, Kano. The gathering resolved to leave the NNPP/Kwankwasiyya, join the APC, and endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for a second term in office,” Jibrin wrote.
He added that nearly 2,000 scholars from his constituency offered special prayers for the President, seeking peace, development, and progress for Kiru/Bebeji, Kano, and Nigeria at large.
Jibrin’s return to the APC comes barely two months after his resignation from the NNPP, following his expulsion over alleged anti-party activities and non-payment of membership dues.
Reacting to his suspension at the time, Jibrin described the move as “shocking and unjustified,” arguing that the interview he granted in both English and Hausa, which the party cited as the basis for his suspension, did not merit such a severe punishment.
He also accused the NNPP leadership of violating fair hearing and due process, saying he was expelled without an opportunity to defend himself. According to him, although he accepted the decision in good faith, he would not challenge it in court.
On the issue of unpaid membership dues, Jibrin maintained that he had always met his obligations, while criticizing the NNPP for what he termed a lack of appreciation for its members.
He nonetheless expressed gratitude to the NNPP for the support he received during his time in the party and urged his supporters to join him in his “new journey” with the APC, while maintaining cordial relations with those remaining in the NNPP.
Jibrin’s defection is seen as a major boost for the APC in Kano State, as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
