What to do after Form I-130 is approved

It takes several months, after which USCIS will send you a notice that your Form I-130 has been approved. In case your relative resides in another country other than the United States the case will be taken to the National Visa Center (NVC). If they are in the U.S, whether to apply for adjustment of status or to go through consular processing is the next step to be taken.

All the applicants apart from those in the USA will have their case numbers allocated to them by the NVC together with instructions. This encompasses paying fees and completing the form I-130 Petition alien relative and the DS-260 form called the Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration Application. It is important that you be responsive to emails, at least to the official ones to check for updates.

If your relative is in the U.S., you will proceed filing Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status.

    1. Pay Fees and Submit DS-260: When the applicant receives a case number, they should then process the immigrant visa processing fees and fill the Form DS-260.

  • Rivers LG Polls: Observers Blame Gov Fubara’s Use Of Non-State Actors for Post-Election Violence ***Exonerate Police of Any Wrongdoing Independent observers have condemned the violence and arson that marred the Rivers State local government elections, blaming Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s supporters for the chaos. The Independent Election Monitoring Group, in its preliminary report, cited widespread irregularities, including the lack of election materials, non-use of electoral registers, and dubious declaration of results. Speaking at a press conference, Executive Director, Dr. Emmanuel Agabi, said Governor Fubara’s insistence on conducting the elections despite court rulings and security concerns has been criticized as a desperate bid to consolidate power. Notably, the report cleared the Nigerian Police of any wrongdoing, highlighting their withdrawal from the election due to a Federal High Court ruling. The report recommends a full investigation into the arson attacks, nullification of election results, deployment of federal security forces, and dialogue between the governor and opposition parties. According to the report, the use of violence by Fubara’s supporters in the wake of the election reflects the Governor’s desperation to suppress opposition and maintain control of the political narrative. By allowing his supporters to engage in such acts of violence, it added that Fubara has contributed to the breakdown of law and order in Rivers State. “The Rivers State local government elections and the subsequent acts of arson represent a low point in the state’s political history,” the report said. “Obviously , the state local government elections have exposed the fragility of the democratic process in the state. “Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s determination to consolidate political power through the Action Peoples Party (APP) and disregard for legal rulings has led to a crisis that threatens both the democratic fabric of Rivers State and the security of its citizens. “The refusal to honor court rulings, combined with the manipulation of electoral processes and violent suppression of opposition, demonstrates a clear disregard for the rule of law. “It is evident that Governor Fubara’s supporters, driven by his desperation to build and secure a political stronghold, are responsible for the violence and destruction that followed the elections. “The state’s political crisis will only worsen if urgent steps are not taken to restore order, accountability, and respect for democratic principles. “The use of arson as a tool for political intimidation is not only reprehensible but dangerous, as it has the potential to escalate into broader conflict. If unchecked, this pattern of governance could erode what remains of democratic practice in Rivers State. “It is therefore imperative that Governor Fubara and his administration give peace a chance by embracing dialogue, respecting court rulings, and adhering to democratic norms. “The Governor must realize that power, when pursued at the expense of the people’s trust and the rule of law, is unsustainable. “For the future of Rivers State, and indeed Nigeria’s democratic experiment, it is crucial that stakeholders at all levels work together to address the deep-seated issues that have emerged from this election. “This includes reforming the electoral system, ensuring accountability for violent actions, and fostering a political culture where power is gained through the people’s will, not through coercion, manipulation, or violence. “In the words of former President Goodluck Jonathan, the political crisis in Rivers State is reminiscent of the crisis in the old Western region. It is a warning sign of what could become a larger national issue if the political situation in Rivers State is not addressed. “It is the responsibility of all concerned parties, including the federal government, to intervene and ensure that Rivers State does not spiral into anarchy. Only through collective action can the state be returned to peace, stability, and genuine democratic governance.”

  • Night economy thrives across China

By Lin Lili, Huang Xiaohui, Wang Xinyue, People’s Daily

On a weekend night, on an open stage in the Ninth Street of Guanyinqiao business area, Jiangbei district, southwest China’s Chongqing municipality, people were singing and dancing, creating a lively atmosphere.
“We come here to listen to music, enjoy food, and go shopping. The Ninth Street never sleeps at night,” said Chen Qi, a young local resident.
Just across the street, at the Beicang Cultural and Creative Block, a 24-hour bookstore was filled with young readers, who are drawn to the artistic night market.
The night economy is an important part of urban commerce. In China, the booming night economy has evolved from traditional night markets centered around dining and shopping to integrated hubs for culture, tourism, and entertainment.
Cities across the country are striving to boost nighttime cultural and tourism consumption and offer a wide range of nighttime activities in line with local conditions, injecting fresh energy into the consumer market.
For instance, the 5th Tianjin Nighttime Life Festival was recently held in north China’s Tianjin municipality, including over 100 events integrating shopping, tourism, culture, and sports.
In Shenyang, capital of northeast China’s Liaoning province, the First Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Culture Night Market was launched, where people could learn traditional Chinese fitness exercises like Baduanjin, Wuqinxi, and Tai Chi from experts.
Shijiazhuang, capital of north China’s Hebei province, has integrated business models such as nighttime entertainment, tourism, and sports, providing a range of sports activities for its residents.
Apart from diverse and vibrant urban nighttime activities, the night economy in Chinese rural areas also has its unique appeal.
For example, in Wangjiazhuang village, Lingtai county, Pingliang, northwest China’s Gansu province, people came together for vibrant bonfire parties and village basketball competitions, also known as “CunBA” usually held after sunset.
Local farmers in Shuijing village, Zhenning county, Anshun, southwest China’s Guizhou province, tapped into the beauty of a vast lotus pond to attract visitors to come and appreciate the lotus flowers while tasting local snacks.
According to Pan Helin, an official with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Chinese night economy is flourishing with numerous highlights: themed night markets with cultural and creative products and delicious food have enriched the options for nighttime consumption; nighttime bookstores and museums are merging with technology and cultural tourism sectors to create new consumption models. “All these services cater to the unique and wide-ranging demands of Chinese consumers,” Pan added.
However, as the night economy develops, residents living near commercial districts inevitably face disturbances such as nighttime noise, lights, and cooking fumes. While promoting the night economy, regions across the country have improved their management and provided better public services to minimize the negative impacts on the surrounding environment.
For instance, Maoming North Road located in Nanjing West Road business circle in Shanghai’s Jing’an district has turned into a pedestrian street every weekend and on all Chinese national holidays. This year, during events like the UEFA EURO football championship and the Paris Olympics Games, some bars and restaurants there were allowed to extend their opening hours from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. on weekends.
It is reported that relevant local government departments have reached agreements with nearby businesses and shop owners on the allocation of outdoor business areas, maintaining consistent LED brightness levels and prohibiting outdoor loudspeaker advertisements at night. In addition, the property management company of the pedestrian has set up a self-regulating committee for shop owners to oversee and enforce these regulations.
The Chinese night economy is developing in tandem with new business forms such as on-demand retail and community e-commerce, better meeting consumers’ nighttime consumption needs.
“I was worried about my child getting cold while swimming at night, so I ordered a few cups of hot ginger tea and some snacks. To my surprise, they arrived in just over 10 minutes,” said Yu Mengying, a resident in Lianyungang, east China’s Jiangsu province, who was unfolding a picnic blanket on a beach.
“Now we can travel light as we don’t need to take too many things with us. We can place orders on our phones anytime, and the delivery is fast,” she said.
New technologies like big data have also improved the management and service quality of the Chinese night economy.
At the Caita night market in Shenyang, a market regulation enforcement officer was checking food vendors using a smart monitoring platform while recording his findings on a mobile application. The inspection was completed in just five minutes.
“We don’t need to carry inspection documents with us, which removes the burden of managing and storing the paperwork, leading to a notable improvement in regulatory efficiency,” said Zhang Zhaoyu, an official with the Shenyang Administration for Market Regulation.
It is reported that Shenyang has included nighttime food safety regulation into a smart supervision platform, aiming to achieve comprehensive smart supervision through mobile terminals.

  • Exclusive: NNPCL, Others Import Tonnes of Off-Spec Fuel into Nigeria

Contrary to its assurances, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) and independent marketers have continued to import substandard and off-specification Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, into Nigeria.

Investigation revealed that the ‘dirty petrol’ could account for as much as a quarter of the estimated 50 million litres of daily consumption when the volume imported by independent marketers is added to that of the NNPCL.

According to a Motor Tanker Vessels Report of Friday, September 13, 2024, sighted by our reporter, the combined amount of petrol imported through the Apapa, Tincan, Lekki, Calabar, Port Harcourt and Warri ports stood at 261,938 metric tonnes.

These deliveries were imported from the same sources deemed off-specification and damaging to automobiles.

Of the reported quantity, NNPCL received 134,938 metric tonnes, while independent marketers received 127,000 metric tonnes, accounting for about one-quarter of the amount of petrol consumed by Nigerians every month.

The off-specification petrol imports were received as months-long fuel queues persist across the country leaving Nigerians no option but to buy the fuel even as NNPCL management continues to assure that all is well.

An industry source, who does not want his name mentioned to protect his business interest, said: “They (NNPCL and independent marketers) have brought into the country the same kind of fuel that was condemned as dirty petrol but they know people are forced to buy this because the queues and shortage are forcing people to be desperate.”

  • Nigerians In Diaspora Urge FG To Review Monetary Policies, Restructure NNPCL’s Debts

Nigerians In Diaspora Urge FG To Review Monetary Policies, Restructure NNPCL’s Debts

Nigerians in the diaspora, under the umbrella of Nigerian Professionals in Diaspora (NPID), has called for an urgent reassessment of the country’s monetary policies, following the recent hike in fuel prices.

In a statement released signed by Dr Obiora Okereke, President and Chief Mrs Bukola Shonekan, Secretary on Thursday, NPID expressed deep concern over the current state of Nigeria’s economy, particularly the recent spike in fuel prices, which has exacerbated the already challenging economic conditions for millions of Nigerians.

The group blamed the economic managers of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration for failing to support the President’s vision with competent and effective policies, citing the poorly implemented floating of the Naira as a glaring example.

NPID noted that instead of stabilizing the currency and attracting foreign investment, the policy has resulted in further depreciation of the Naira, leading to an unstable exchange rate that has driven up the cost of goods and services across the board.

The group also called for the restructuring of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) debts, reportedly exceeding $6 billion, which has put the nation in a precarious position regarding fuel supply.

“We believe that President Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria is clear, but the implementation of his economic policies by his advisers and managers is lacking in strategic foresight and execution,” NPID said.

The group urged the President to take immediate action to address the economic challenges facing the country, including reassessing monetary policies, restructuring NNPCL’s debts, and holding economic managers accountable for their actions.

  • Edo 2024: Ighodalo not godson, puppet, Agbonavbare counters godfatherism allegation

Edo 2024: Ighodalo not godson, puppet, Agbonavbare counters godfatherism allegation

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Chief Adolor Agbonavbare has described as a baseless rumour a claim that Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki is a political godfather to Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the PDP candidate in the forthcoming 2024 governorship elections.

In a statement signed and released to press Sunday in Benin, Chief Agbonavbare said it is imperative to dispel these falsehoods and shed light on the realities of these two distinguished individuals.

According to him, in Nigerian politics, rumours, propaganda and misinformation are often weaved to cloud the truth, creating a distorted image of individuals and their relationships.

The Edo State grassroots politician described Governor Godwin Obaseki as a man known for his progressive leadership and commitment to good governance.

He said: “His tenure as Governor of Edo State has been marked by notable achievements in infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and economic growth and civil service reforms. Obaseki’s track record speaks for itself, demonstrating his dedication to serving the people of Edo State and advancing their interests.

“On the other hand, Dr. Asue Ighodalo is a highly accomplished individual with a background in law and economics. His reputation as a seasoned lawyer and economist is well-established, with a global recognition for his expertise and professionalism. Dr. Asue Ighodalo has chaired the boards of several blue-chip companies, showcasing his leadership skills and strategic acumen in the corporate world. Currently, he runs one of the largest law firms in Nigeria, employing over a hundred lawyers, further highlighting his success and influence in the legal field.

“It is essential to emphasize that Dr. Asue Ighodalo is a man of integrity and independence, with a strong sense of principles and ethics guiding his actions. His career achievements and professional accomplishments stand as a testament to his capabilities and leadership qualities. Dr. Asue Ighodalo known for his commitment to excellence and his unwavering dedication to upholding the highest standards in all his endeavours is out of the league of those who can pocketed in a godfather/godson arrangement. If Obaseki was looking for a godson, Dr. Asue Ighodalo wouldn’t be a choice considering his pedigree.

“As such, the notion that Governor Godwin Obaseki could be a political godfather to Dr. Asue Ighodalo is not only unfounded but also blatantly false. Both individuals are distinguished in their own right, with unique backgrounds and achievements that set them apart as leaders in their respective fields. To suggest that Dr. Asue Ighodalo is anyone’s puppet is a disservice to his character and undermines his autonomy as a capable and independent thinker. A godson would be malleable and docile but the very distinguished Dr. Asue Ighodalo would not make such an ignoble list.

“It is crucial to recognize that political dynamics in Nigeria are complex, often influenced by various factors such as alliances, interests, and ideologies. However, it is essential to differentiate between reality and speculation, especially when it comes to the integrity and reputation of individuals like Governor Godwin Obaseki and Dr. Asue Ighodalo. Baseless allegations and misinformation do a disservice to the public discourse and detract from a genuine understanding of the contributions these individuals make to society.”

He urged Edolites to dispel the propaganda and lies surrounding Governor Obaseki and Ighodalo as both individuals are respected for their achievements and leadership qualities, and they deserve to be judged based on facts rather than unfounded rumours.

“Governor Obaseki and Dr. Ighodalo are independent, capable leaders who have earned their reputations through hard work, dedication, and a commitment to excellence. Let us focus on the truth and resist the temptation to perpetuate falsehoods that sow discord and division.

“Dr. Asue Ighodalo is a consummate lawyer, successful business person and a great leader. He is a founding partner of Banwo & Ighodalo, a leading Nigerian corporate and commercial law firm, he is nobody’s “boy” or “godson” as fifth columnists want the unsuspecting edolites to believe” he added.
