The organized labor unions, including the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), have announced a nationwide strike in response to the attack on NLC President, Joe Ajaero. This decision was made during a briefing held in Abuja on Friday.
The labor unions have presented a six-point demand to the Federal Government. This includes the immediate removal of the Imo State Commissioner of Police, the Area Commander, and other police officers involved in the alleged brutalization and humiliation of Ajaero and other workers.
The nationwide strike is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.
The attack on NLC President Joe Ajaero occurred during an organized labor protest in Imo State on Wednesday. Ajaero was reportedly taken by Nigerian Police Force officers and later appeared with visible injuries on his face, confirming that he had been subjected to physical violence.
In response to his injuries, NLC Publicity Secretary Benson Upah stated that the extent of Ajaero’s injuries required treatment abroad, as he could not be adequately treated at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Owerri.
