A renowned Nigerian financial expert has urged the organizers of the prestigious Headies awards to reconsider their tradition of awarding cars to the winners of the Next Rated Artist category.
This unexpected counsel follows reports of previous winners, such as Reekado Banks and Buju, selling their newly acquired cars.
The Next Rated Artist category at the Headies awards has long been a highly sought-after accolade in the Nigerian music industry. Winners not only gain recognition but also receive a brand-new car as part of their prize.
The self-proclaimed financial guru argued that gifting cars might not be the most prudent financial choice, especially when some past recipients have chosen to sell the vehicles. Instead, he proposed that the Headies organizers shift to offering cash rewards.
He contended that cash rewards would empower the artists to make more informed financial decisions aligned with their individual goals and priorities. In some instances, he even advised artists to consider using the money from selling the car to establish their own record labels.
