A coalition of civil society organisations has thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging him to ignore recent remarks attributed to the National Scribe of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bashiru Ajibola, over the political relevance of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike.
The coalition, operating under the banner of the Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Peace, Security, Good Governance, Equity and Justice, described the comments as a needless distraction at a time when governance delivery and political consolidation should take priority.
The position was contained in a statement jointly signed by Comrade James Okoronkwo, Dr Chinemerem Iwuanyanwu, Comrade Aisha Mohammed, Barrister Samuel Eze, and Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi, representing member organisations within the coalition.
Speaking on the development, Comrade James Okoronkwo said Wike’s performance in the FCT has placed him among the administration’s most effective public office holders.
“The infrastructural transformation currently ongoing in the FCT did not happen by chance. It is the result of firm leadership, administrative experience, and a commitment to delivery. Barrister Nyesom Wike has proven that capacity matters in governance,” Okoronkwo said.
Comrade Aisha Mohammed noted that the renewed pace of development in Abuja has had a direct impact on residents and public perception of government.
“What we are witnessing in the FCT is a government that is visible and responsive. Road rehabilitation, urban renewal, and public facility upgrades have restored confidence among residents and investors alike,” she said.
Barrister Samuel Eze emphasised the political implications of Wike’s grassroots influence, particularly as the 2027 elections draw closer.
“Politics is about structure and connection with the people. Wike’s grassroots reach in Rivers State and his growing acceptance in the FCT make him a strategic ally for President Tinubu as the administration builds toward 2027,” Eze stated.
On his part, Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi cautioned against internal party distractions, stressing the need for unity within the ruling party.
“This is not the time for internal divisions or personal sentiments. The President must remain focused on national stability, performance, and unity, which are critical to sustaining the Renewed Hope agenda,” Abdullahi said.
The coalition also referenced governance developments in Rivers State, noting that recent leadership challenges further highlight the impact of strong executive direction.
The CSOs urged President Tinubu to continue to align with proven performers and bridge political divides in the interest of national development, insisting that competence and results-driven leadership would remain decisive factors as the 2027 elections approach.
