PORT HARCOURT — Tragedy struck the Odhiajie Community in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State on Wednesday as suspected cultists reportedly killed a former youth leader, Godspower Uwhetu.
According to local sources, the assailants, believed to be members of the Iceland cult group, stormed Uwhetu’s residence at about 1:00 am. The group, allegedly led by one Sam — a known follower of the late notorious cult leader David Gift, alias 2Baba — dragged Uwhetu from his home and shot him dead in front of his house.
A community member, Hector Chinem Ekeakita, former Public Relations Officer of the Igbu Akoh Youth Congress, confirmed the incident. Ekeakita revealed that tensions had been high since Uwhetu was accused of alerting soldiers to raid Sam’s home.
“Before this incident, Sam’s mother publicly confronted Uwhetu, accusing him of calling soldiers to her son’s house. Uwhetu denied wrongdoing but reportedly went into hiding shortly after,” Ekeakita said. “He had even told friends that if anything happened to him, Sam should be held responsible.”
Uwhetu’s murder has reignited fears of escalating violence in the area, with residents expressing deep concern over the increasing spate of cult-related attacks.
“The Igbu Akoh kingdom is facing daily gunfire. Just last week, property was destroyed and solar installations were vandalized in the nearby Odieke-Akoh community,” Ekeakita added. “We are calling on the Sole Administrator, the Police, the Army, and other security agencies to act swiftly before the situation worsens.”
As of press time, the Rivers State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
