A coalition of over 352 civil society organizations under the Advocacy for Good Ethics and Accountability for Development, has issued a 72-hour ultimatum demanding the immediate resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The group cited allegations of sexual harassment and administrative misconduct leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as grounds for his resignation.
In a statement signed by Comrade Henry Thomas on Monday, the coalition described Akpabio’s continued stay in office as an “embarrassment to the nation” and a threat to Nigeria’s ethical governance. They warned that if Akpabio fails to step down by the deadline Wednesday, February 5, 2025, in their capacity, they will mobilize nationwide protests, initiate legal proceedings, and engage foreign embassies to escalate the matter internationally.
The coalition also criticized the government’s silence on the issue, arguing that it undermines President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and casts doubt on the ruling All Progressives Congress’ (APC) commitment to accountability.
Meanwhile as at the time of filing this report, public pressure continues to mount, with former Senate President Bukola Saraki and other prominent figures joining calls for Akpabio’s resignation. As the deadline looms, Nigerians await the Senate President’s response and the government’s stance on the matter.
