The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has highlighted 142 recommendations aimed at improving Nigeria’s electoral process, according to its chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
Speaking at a consultative meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Abuja on Thursday, Yakubu outlined the scope of the recommendations. These cover preparedness, voter education, political party management, electoral logistics, security, technology, and legal frameworks.
Out of the total recommendations, 86 require administrative action by INEC, while 48 call for collaboration with external stakeholders, including security agencies, civil society organizations, and political parties. Eight recommendations will need legislative action from the National Assembly.
Yakubu emphasized the importance of clarity in result management and suggested reforms for voter accreditation, including introducing computer-generated slips as alternatives to Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs). This measure aims to reduce costs and curb voter disenfranchisement caused by PVC collection challenges and fraudulent practices.
The meeting, the last for the year, focused on learning from the 2023 general elections and planning future improvements in the electoral process.
