Bribery Allegations: FG Panel Confirms Bobrisky Served Jail Term, Enjoyed Special Privileges

-

An investigative panel commissioned by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has submitted its findings regarding the prison term served by Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky. The report confirms that Bobrisky completed his six-month sentence for abusing the naira but enjoyed certain privileges during his time in custody.

Bobrisky had earlier dismissed bribery allegations after a viral voice note suggested he paid N15 million to officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to avoid a money laundering charge. The recording also claimed that Bobrisky’s “godfather,” along with Haliru Nababa, the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), ensured he served his sentence in a private apartment instead of prison.

Reading the phase one report on Monday, Uju Agomoh, a member of the panel, denied these claims, stating that no evidence suggested Bobrisky slept outside the custodial center between April 12, 2024, and August 5, 2024. The panel confirmed Bobrisky received certain privileges during his incarceration, but the claims of bribery and serving time outside the prison were not substantiated.

The panel was established following public outcry, with many, including social critic Martins Otse, alleging corruption within the NCS. The investigation was tasked with probing these allegations and ensuring transparency in Bobrisky’s case.

This report follows a wider probe into corruption and operational violations within the NCS, initiated by the federal government in September 2024.
