Calls for former Nigerian internationals to take up coaching roles in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) have finally been answered, as legends Emmanuel Amuneke, Daniel Amokachi, and Finidi George step into prominent positions in the league.
Emmanuel Amuneke (Heartland FC)
Amuneke, a key player in Nigeria’s 1994 AFCON victory, returned to the NPFL on August 5 as head coach of Heartland FC. With an extensive coaching background, including roles at Al Hazm, Julius Berger, and Tanzania’s national team, he aims to revitalize Heartland, which faced relegation last season. After a rocky start with one draw and three losses, Amuneke celebrated a much-needed 2-0 win against Niger Tornadoes, stating, “I am happy for the players. We deserved this moment of joy. It has given us relief and confidence for our next match against El Kanemi.”
Finidi George (Rivers United)
Another 1994 AFCON champion, Finidi George, currently leads Rivers United, his second NPFL stint after coaching Enyimba last season. Since his arrival at Rivers, Finidi has guided the team to the top of the NPFL standings with 13 points from five matches, including a recent 2-1 victory over Akwa United. Despite a brief and challenging period as head coach of the Super Eagles, Finidi’s track record in the elite division remains strong.
Daniel Amokachi (Lobi Stars)
Daniel Amokachi, affectionately known as “Da Bull,” has taken the reins at Lobi Stars as technical adviser. Appointed on October 7, he replaces Eugene Agagbe following a board shakeup. Amokachi brings substantial coaching experience, having managed teams like Nasarawa United and Enyimba, alongside international roles. However, Lobi’s current 17th place in the standings, with only four points from four matches, poses a significant challenge as he seeks to turn the team’s fortunes around.
