Controversial figure Okuneye Idris, popularly known as Bobrisky, faces the possibility of spending the Eid-il-Fitri break behind bars.
Bobrisky was apprehended on April 3 and found guilty by a Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday, April 5, 2024, after admitting to charges of currency abuse filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The EFCC brought forth a six-count charge against Bobrisky, with the initial four counts concerning Naira abuse and the remaining two counts related to alleged money laundering.
Ahead of the charge reading, the EFCC prosecutor urged the court to dismiss counts five and six.
Bobrisky admitted guilt to the four-count charge of Naira abuse but appealed for leniency, expressing ignorance of the laws regarding currency abuse and promising to educate his social media followers on the matter.
“I am a social media influencer with over five million followers. I would do a video on my page, and I would educate people about spraying money. I will not repeat it, My Lord. I regret my actions, My Lord. I am a first-time offender,” he stated.
As a result, Justice Abimbola Awogboro slated April 9, 2024, for his sentencing and ordered his detention in EFCC custody until then.
However, on Sunday, the Federal Government announced Tuesday and Wednesday, April 9 and 10, 2024, as public holidays for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this in a statement by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Aishetu Ndayako.
Given that Bobrisky’s sentencing date coincides with the Eid-il-Fitri break, it is unlikely that the court will convene unless Justice Awogboro opts to hold the session today. Consequently, the controversial personality may find himself spending the holiday period in detention.
