    The Civil Society Groups for Good Governance (CSGGG) has commended the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, for what it describes as a “remarkable display of leadership, vision, and national commitment” that has restored peace and stability to the state.

    In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its President, Chief Ogakwu Dominic, the group praised Ibas decisive and inclusive leadership style, which it said helped defuse long-standing political tensions and rebuild public trust in the state’s governance structures.

    “Through his forthright vision and uncommon commitment, the Sole Administrator has successfully neutralized conflict situations, restored harmony across communities, and stabilized the political landscape of Rivers State,” the statement read.

    CSGGG particularly noted the peaceful and credible conduct of the recent local government elections, describing it as a milestone achievement that underscored the Administrator’s competence and statesmanship.

    “Despite widespread doubts, the elections were held in an atmosphere of calm, fairness, and inclusivity. This success brought together divergent political interests and fostered reconciliation among previously polarized factions,” Chief Dominic said.

    The group also lauded the Administrator’s continued service to the nation, even after his formal retirement, describing it as an act of rare patriotism and national sacrifice.

    “His unwavering dedication to national assignments, even after meritorious retirement from service, reflects true statesmanship and a selfless devotion to Nigeria’s unity and progress,” the statement added.

    CSGGG further commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what it called a “strategic and visionary” appointment, made at a time when the state was grappling with political uncertainty.

    “At a time when decisive leadership was needed to calm the storm in Rivers State, the President acted wisely by appointing someone with the right credentials, experience, and political acumen,” Chief Dominic stated.

    He urged citizens and stakeholders in the state to rally behind the Administrator’s efforts and ensure that the hard-won peace is sustained through continued cooperation and dialogue.

    “Today, Rivers State is no longer a symbol of division, but a beacon of hope, unity, and governance done right,” the statement concluded.

    Lagos: Police confirm Davido’s son Ifeanyi dead, begin investigations

    • Domestic Staffs in custody 

    The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the death of Ifeanyi Adeleke, the first son of singer David ‘Davido‘ Adeleke and Chioma Rowland.

    The Command also confirmed that all members of Davido’s domestic staff are in police custody following the death of Ifeanyi.

    Lagos police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, announced this on Tuesday.

    Speaking on the sad incident, the Lagos PPRO said preliminary investigations are ongoing to unravel what led to the boy’s death.

    He said: “Domestic staff at Davido’a home have been taken to the station to give their own account of what happened. I wouldn’t call that arrest yet.

    “If after they all give their own account of what happened and after preliminary investigations, if anyone of them is found culpable, the person will now be placed under arrest”.

    The DMW boss and his fiancee, Chioma were reportedly away from the house when the boy drowned in a pool at his father’s house in Banana Island on Monday evening.

    Senator blames insecurity on inadequate funding for police

    Sen. Nicholas Tofowomo (PDP-Ondo), has blamed the current security challenge on inadequate funding by successive government for the Nigeria Police Force.

    Tofowomo said this when he spoke with newsmen on Tuesday in Okitipupa, while inspecting rehabilitation work on the burnt Okitipupa police station and area command through his sponsorship.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the structures were destroyed by hoodlums on Oct. 22, 2020 during the #EndSARS protest.

    Tofowomo urged the Federal Government to strive towards ensuring adequate funding and equipping the police who played vital role of ensuring security of lives and property in the country.

    “Policing in a large and diverse country like Nigeria needs enormous funding and sophisticated weapons, but the poor funding in yearly budgets of the police by past government is responsible for the current situation.

    “You will be surprised that the same police being condemned will have lived up to expectations, if the government had improved their funding and give them sophisticated weapons,” he said.

    Tofowomo who expressed satisfaction with the level of work at the police station and area command, said that his concern for the safety of lives and property of his constituents made him to bankroll the project.

    He said that the rehabilitation work would be completed before Dec. 26, when the station would be commissioned and hand over to the police.

    DSP Funmilayo Odunlami, spokesperson for the police command in Ondo, lauded the senator for taking such a bold step to ensure safety of residents.

    Odunlami said this in a telephone interview with NAN on Tuesday.

    “We thank the senator for his display of kindness and ensuring safety of lives and property of residents, I appeal to our youths to stop the destruction of government property to press home their demands,” she said.

    Oba Festus Olumoyegun, the Oniju of Iju-Odo also lauded Tofowowo for his gesture towards rebuilding the station, saying he has brought succour to the people of Ikaleland, in spite of the fact that he was not an indigene of the area.

    The traditional ruler said that Tofowomo has proven beyond reasonable doubt that he can be trusted at all times and urged other politicians to emulate the gesture.

    The police in Imo have arrested the alleged Eastern Security Network (ESN) native doctor with Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
    This is contained in a statement by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Abutu Yaro and signed by the command’s Spokesman, CSP Mike Abattam in Owerri.
    ”After a diligent forensic and technical intelligence gathering, the suspect, Benneth Okoli, 49, was arrested in his shrine at Akuma in Oru East LGA of Imo.
    “On searching the shrine, one locally made IED, charms and weed suspected to be cannabis were recovered.
    “The suspect on interrogation, made useful statements and is currently assisting the police to arrest the rest of his gang, presently on the run.”
    ”The arrest is coming a few days after bandits had an encounter with the police in the area.
    “Sequel to the attack on the Omuma Police Station in Oru East by bandits suspected to be the remnants of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and ESN terror groups, the CP dispatched the command’s tactical teams led by ACP Benjamin Osuji.
    “The team was directed to carry out discreet investigation and arrest the bandits involved in the attack of the police station.
    He said that the CP commended the gallantry displayed by the officers and men of the command, urging them to sustain the tempo.

    The Police Command in Kaduna State has assured residents of adequate security during the Eid-el-Kabir period in the State.
    The Command’s assurance came through its spokesperson, ASP Mohammed Jalige, in a statement issued on Monday in Kaduna.
    “The Command has deployed Conventional Policemen, Mobile Police Force, personnel of Operation Puff Adder II, as well as Under-Cover operatives .

    Bayelsa Judicial Panel awards N21bn against Police

    The Bayelsa Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Police Brutality and other Related Offence has awarded N21 billion to victims of extra-judicial killings perpetrated by the police and other security operatives.
    Chairman of the Panel, rtd. Justice Young Ogola, disclosed this while submitting the report to Gov. Douye Diri in Yenagoa.
    Justice Ogola said the panel received and determined 50 petitions and made recommendations based on their findings.
    Out of the 50 cases, he said 11 police officers were recommended for prosecution, one for dismissal, four for demotion, while eight cases were struck out and two adjourned.
    The chairman, explained that the N21 billion was awarded in damages out of the 40 cases fully determined, adding that the amount included compensation to communities razed down by the Nigerian Army.
    Receiving the report, Gov. Diri thanked the panel for doing a thorough job and promised to set up a government White paper committee to look into the report with a view to implementing its recommendations.
    The governor, represented by his deputy, Mr Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, noted that government would look for ways to bring relief to the victims and families within available resources.
    ”Although no amount of compensation can bring back some of the deceased, the compensation will ameliorate the suffering of the victims and families caused by the excesses of misguided security agents,” he said.
    While acknowledging the enormous task of the security agencies to secure lives and property, Diri, called on security personnel to enforce the law within the confines of the law.
    “The panel was set up to get to the root of injustice, violation of human rights and the best way with which police and other security agencies in the country will discharge their duties professionally with human face.
    “The issues you have raised will be looked into. The N21 billion awarded is appropriate, but for the security agencies to pay is another thing.
    “We will within the limits of available resources and procedures see how these victims will get reprieve.
    “While the law enforcement agencies have everyday to protect lives and property, they also have a duty to do that within the confines of responsibility and protection of human rights of all citizens,” he said.
    The panel was inaugurated on Oct. 28, 2020 after the #EndSars# nationwide protest.
    Other members of the panel are Mr Y.B. Ogola, Mr Alaowei Opokuma as Secretary, A.T. Ambaowei, Mr Fortune Alfred Godson, Miss Perelade Demanche both representing civil society and Russell Newman representing the National Human Rights Commission. (NAN)

    Police confirm kidnap of passenger by gunmen in Osun

    The Police in Osun on Tuesday confirmed the kidnapping of a traveller in Ede town, near Imesi-Ile in Obokun Local Government Area of the state.

    The Police Public Relation Officer in the state, SP Yemisi Opalola, who confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo, said the victim was kidnapped by gunmen on Monday evening.

    According to Opalola, the interstate bus which the victim boarded from Ekiti to Osun was forcefully stopped by the gunmen in Ede town, a border between Ekiti and Osun.

    The PPRO said while other passengers in the bus had the opportunity to escape into the bush, the victim was unlucky and was kidnapped.

    Opalola, however, said that the identity of the kidnapped person had yet to be known.

    She said the police tactical team and local vigilantes were already on the trail of the kidnappers.

    Opalola said that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Olawale Olokode, had equally directed police tactical team to ensure the kidnappers were arrested. (NAN)

    MURIC unhappy with police over non arrest of suspected attackers of osun worshippers

    The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has expressed concern over the inability of the police to arrest alleged perpetrators of June 26, attack on worshippers in Osun.

    Prof. Ishaq Akintola,Director, MURIC, said this in a statement in Lagos on Thursday.

    He said the police explanation on the issue was unacceptable and could fuel misconduct.

    Akintola appealed to the police command in the state to do the needful without wasting time for justice to prevail.

    “We are getting worried. Law abiding worshippers were attacked right in front of their worship centre in daylight and the police are saying no arrest has been made.

    “We are talking about human life here. A whole Baba Adinni of the organisation was killed and the police are telling the world that it has made no arrest.

    “We can see that the police have started footdragging. Procrastination is the thief of time.

    “The culprits are digging in while police are hesitating to move in. Those guns will disappear into thin air in no course of time if the operatives did not act now,” he said.

    Akintola added:“Meanwhile, we are still waiting to hear from Afenifere the pan Yourba cultural group and other vocal groups. Why is everyone still silent days after the attack.”

    Atleast one person was killed, while 14 others were seriously injured when suspected masquerade attacked worshippers in Osun on Sunday, June 26.

    Mr Olawale Olokode, the state Commissioner of Police said, however, that no arrest has yet to be made on the incident. (NAN)

    The Anti-crime Patrol team of the Police Command in Kogi has eliminated two members of a suspected five-man kidnapping gang in a shootout on the Ajaokuta highway.
    Mr Onogwu Muhammed, Chief Press Secretary to the Kogi governor, disclosed this in a statement issued to newsman on Wednesday in Abuja.
    Muhammed said that the Police repelled what would have been another circle of kidnapping attack by the gang members who were in military uniform.
    He said that the team of policemen also recovered arms, money, phones, Bank ATM cards and other valuables from the criminals.
    “The alleged criminals numbering five had blocked the road stopping vehicles until the men of the Anti-Crime Patrol team swooped on them and engaged them in fierce gun battle.
    “Two of the criminals were killed as three others escaped into the bush with gunshot injuries.
    “The police teams are on the trail of the fleeing suspected kidnappers, combing bush areas around the location of incidence.
    “The Police have in their possession items recovered from the criminals which include two wooden AK47, 25 assorted GSM handsets, one First Bank ATM card bearing Mohammed Jamiu and undisclosed sum of money,’’ Muhammed said.
    The CPS said that Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi praised the gallantry and swift response of the security team who engaged the suspected kidnappers
    He said that Bello also urged the residents to go about their normal businesses as the state was committed to ensuring the security of lives and property of residents in the state.
    Muhammed quoted Bello as saying, “Kogi state has no abode for criminal elements, the state exists only for law abiding persons.
    “Whoever thinks he can engage in crime will be decisively dealt with. Our gallant security forces are on ground to ensure lives and property are secured.

    Police investigate murder of DSS operative in Ekiti

    The Police Command in Ekiti State on Saturday confirmed the murder of a detective with the Department of the State Security Service (DSS) in a hotel at Ado Ekiti on Friday night.

    ASP Sunday Abutu, the command’s spokesman, who made the confirmation to newsmen, said the detective was murdered during an argument with some soldiers.

    “I can confirm we heard that the DSS operative was killed during a hot argument with some soldiers yesterday, (Friday) evening.

    “The deceased corpse has been deposited in the morgue and I can assure you that the perpetrators of the murder have also been arrested.

    “Let me also add that our detectives have started investigation and we will get to the root of the matter,” Abutu said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident happened in Ado Ekiti on Friday evening as three soldiers allegedly killed DSS operative inside the hotel (names withheld).

    A reliable source told NAN that the incident occurred about 7.30 p.m. at the hotel located along NTA road in Ado Ekiti, where one of the soldiers allegedly stabbed the detective DSS on the neck.

    NAN gathered that the incident happened following the arrest of a suspected fraudster in the hostel.

    The source said “As the soldiers who were inside the hotel stopped the young man they suspected to be a ‘yahoo boy’ and started interrogating him, the young man saw the DSS operative on a bike and beckoned on him to come to his rescue.

    “When the DSS man got to the soldiers, a hot argument ensued between them and one of the soldiers became so angry that he drew out a knife and stabbed DSS operative in the neck.

    “The DSS man fell immediately and started bleeding. The people who are inside the hotel drinking began to run for dear lives. In fact they hurriedly fled the scene to prevent being arrested,” the source who pleaded anonymity said.

    The source also said that few minutes after the incident some DSS operatives stormed the hotel from nowhere and arrested the soldiers. (NAN)
