FIRS extends tax debt payments to Aug. 31

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has extended the closing date of its waiver of penalty and interest window on tax debts owned by individuals and businesses from June 30 to August 31, 2020.

Mr Abdullahi Ahmad, the FIRS Director, Communications and Liaison Department made this known in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday.

Ahmad quoted the Executive Chairman of FIRS, Mr Muhammad Nami as saying “the extension is a follow up to a number of palliative measures devised by the service to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Nigerian economy and to support tax-paying individuals and business entities in the country.

“The latest extension applies to tax audit, tax investigation and desk review assessments, approved instalment payment plans under Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme yet to be fully liquidated” he said.

Nami disclosed that there will be no further extension of this palliative measure.

He said tax debtors were therefore enjoined to liquidate their outstanding tax liabilities on or before August 31 in order to enjoy waiver of accumulated penalties and interests.

He also advised all concerned individuals and businesses to contact their respective tax Controller or the nearest FIRS Regional Debt Management Office in case of further enquiries adding that a list of all our offices was available on their website: www.firs.gov.ng.

Kanye West breaks ranks with Trump, vows to win presidential race

Rapper Kanye West signalled he no longer supports U.S. President Donald Trump and said he had entered the presidential race to win it, in an interview published on Wednesday.

West, previously a vocal supporter of Trump, announced on Saturday that he would run for president in 2020.

“I am taking the red hat off, with this interview.

“Like anything I’ve ever done in my life, I’m doing this to win,’’ West told Forbes, referring to Trump’s trademark red “Make America Great Again” baseball cap.

He told the magazine he would run under a new banner, the Birthday Party.

West and his reality TV star wife, Kim Kardashian West, have visited Trump in the White House.

He, however, denied that his aim was to split the Black vote and hurt the chances of Trump’s Democratic opponent, Joe Biden.

“It was a form of racism and white supremacy to suggest all Black people should support the Democrats’’ he said.

The rapper told Forbes he had been ill with COVID-19 in February and would be suspicious of any vaccines developed to prevent the infection, repeating false theories that link vaccines with child developmental disorders.

“So, when they say the way we’re going to fix COVID-19 is with a vaccine, I’m extremely cautious, as that’s the mark of the beast.

“They want to put chips inside of us, they want to do all kinds of things, to make it where we can’t cross the gates of heaven,’’ Kanye added.

BREAKING: Buhari, ministers honour Abdulkadir as FEC meeting begins

The President, Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, led other members of the Federal Executive Council to honour a former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Inuwa Abdulkadir, who died on Monday.

Buhari led other members to observe a minute silence in honour of Abdulkadir at the beginning of the ongoing FEC virtual meeting.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Gambari; and about 11 ministers are physically attending the meeting at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja while others are attending virtually from their offices.

106 ADP members defect to PDP in Edo

Following the defection of Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo from the ruling APC to the PDP, 106 members of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) have also defected to PDP.

The ADP defectors are from Egor, Ovia South West and Ovia North East Local Government Areas of Edo.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defections came as Edo State gets set for a governorship election, described by analysts as a two-horse race between the PDP and APC.

The governorship election is slated for Sept. 19.

Mr Oshodin Izedomwen, the Organising Secretary of the ADP in Edo, who led the defectors, said on Tuesday in Benin that the defection was part of their belief in the capacity of the PDP.

He recalled that he was a founding member of the PDP and that he left the party because of some persons, whom he described as “strange bed fellows” who came to join the PDP.

Izedomwen said that the other defectors and himself had now returned to the PDP because the “strange bed fellows had since left the party.

“In politics, interest matters because it is always the driving force,” he stated.

Receiving the defectors, the Edo State Chairman of the PDP, Dr Tony Aziegbemi, expressed delight with the defectors.

He described the action of the new party members and their leader as a home coming.

Aziegbemi assured the defectors that they would be integrated into the PDP to contribute to the success of the party in the state.

On June 19, Obaseki defected from the APC to PDP, having been disqualified by the APC to contest for re-election on the platform of the party.

The governor, subsequently, clinched the gubernatorial ticket of the PDP on June 25, after three other aspirants stepped down for him.

COVID-19: China Chamber Of Commerce In Nigeria Donates PPEs To Ministry Of Health

The Honourable Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Enhanire and Honourable Minister of State for Health Dr. Adeleke Mamora received Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) from the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria and Huawei Technologies in partnership with Hubei Zall Foundation of China, yesterday, 26th June, 2020 at Ministry of Health, Abuja.

The donation of the PPEs is in recognition of the critical roles of the Ministry of Health in combating the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.

The Honourable Minster of Health, Dr Osagie Enhanire express his gratitude toward China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria and others for their generous support in fighting COVID-19 in Nigeria.
The minister said when he met with the Deputy Managing Director Kelvin Yang, “We have been hit by COVID-19 infection which is crippling the health system of many countries, here in our country we are very worried about the effect of COVID-19, and we here in ministry of health are the ones who are responsible corresponding to this COVID-19 threats and we are very grateful for this donation because we have received many gift from China; from the government, Jack Ma Foundation, CCECC and other organizations from China”.

The PPEs which include 40,000 Disposable Surgical Masks, 1500 Disposable Medical Protective Suite and 1 carton of Infra-red Thermal Imaging Thermometer was donated to the ministry.

In his remarks during the presentation, on behalf of China Chamber of Commerce ,Deputy Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Company Nigeria Limited, Kelvin Yang stated that “Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress and working together is success, It’s therefore a privilege to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Health to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic”.

“The China Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria houses all major Chinese enterprises in Nigeria and ensures the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and China is strengthened and promoted”, Yang said.
