    The Center for Peace, Transparency and Accountability (CPTA) has condemned what it described as a politically motivated attempt to discredit the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, over renewed allegations concerning his academic credentials. The group said the recent report by Premium Times was part of a “desperate witch-hunt” by political opponents unsettled by the Minister’s rising profile and track record of performance.

    In a strongly worded statement signed by its Executive Director, Comrade Patrick Ogheneyero Jr., CPTA clarified that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), had in December 2023 officially confirmed Chief Nnaji’s graduation with a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology/Biochemistry, Second Class (Lower Division). The organization described the emergence of a contrary letter in May 2025 as “suspicious,” especially given the alleged political affiliations of certain individuals recently appointed to leadership roles at the institution.

    CPTA also questioned the integrity of the current Vice Chancellor of UNN, alleging political interference and possible abuse of office. The group called for an immediate investigation into the VC’s academic background and political connections, stating that using the university to fight partisan battles violates academic ethics and undermines institutional credibility.

    The statement further criticized Premium Times for what CPTA termed “biased and unbalanced reporting,” accusing the platform of amplifying a politically motivated narrative without verifying facts. The group reminded the public that the matter is already before the Federal High Court in Abuja, where Justice H.J. Yilwa has restrained UNN from tampering with the Minister’s records pending the determination of the case.

    Reaffirming its support for Chief Nnaji, CPTA described him as a visionary leader whose reforms have repositioned the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The group urged the media and the public to reject sensationalism and remain committed to truth, fairness, and accountability in the interest of national progress.

    The Centre for Peace, Transparency and Accountability (CPTA) has called on former presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi to retract and apologise for his claim that two students died during the Student Union Government (SUG) election at the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State.

    At a press conference in Abuja, the organisation’s Executive Director, Comrade Patrick Ogheneyero Jr., described Obi’s statement—made via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on July 5—as “inaccurate, unverified, and capable of inciting public concern.”

    “We believe the statement to be false and misleading,” Ogheneyero said. “It has the potential to cause panic, misinform the public, and tarnish the image of a reputable institution.”

    Citing an official report by the Polytechnic’s Director of Public Relations, Mrs. Angela Egele, the group said no deaths or serious injuries occurred during the election, which was declared inconclusive due to procedural irregularities. The election, they stated, was held peacefully under the supervision of security agencies and independent observers.

    CPTA issued a seven-day ultimatum for Mr. Obi to publicly apologise and correct the record, warning of possible legal action if the demand is not met.

    The group also used the occasion to commend the institution’s Rector, Dr. Salisu Shehu Umar, for his developmental strides since assuming office in February 2022. Listed achievements include the construction of new road networks, modern classroom blocks, a 250-seat lecture theatre for the School of Engineering, and upgrades to the central library and ICT centre.

    “Dr. Umar has demonstrated a strong commitment to institutional development and student welfare. It is crucial that public commentary supports, rather than undermines, such progress,” Ogheneyero added.

    CPTA urged political figures and opinion leaders to verify claims before making public pronouncements, stressing the need for responsible engagement with facts to maintain public trust in educational and national institutions.

    The Center for Peace, Transparency, and Accountability (CPTA) has expressed concerns over the recent turn of events in the nationwide protests, which have resulted in vandalism and disruption of societal peace.

    At an event held today, Executive Director Comrade Patrick Ogheneyero criticized the protesters’ methods, emphasizing that their actions undermines the legitimacy of their grievances.

    Ogheneyero strongly condemned the display of Russian flags and calls for foreign intervention, labeling these acts as treasonous and a threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty.

    He emphasized that while freedom of speech and expression are fundamental rights, they have limitations and must not be used to compromise national security.

    The group urged the government to take immediate action to address the root causes of the protests, including the prompt allocation of funds to necessary departments and agencies. They also called for effective measures to curtail the unrest and prevent further harm to innocent citizens.

    Meanwhile Comrade Solomon Adodo, another speaker, suggested ways the federal government can alleviate economic hardship by reimbursing contractors and agencies. The organization emphasized the need for peaceful resolution and dialogue, stressing that these values are essential for a progressive society.
