A militant group, Niger Delta Rescue Movement, has threatened to attack oil installations in the Niger Delta region over the alleged seizure of Rivers State’s allocation. The group has also called on non-indigenes residing in the state to leave immediately for their safety, warning that hostilities are about to begin.
A video circulating on social media shows about eight armed militants in an undisclosed forest, chanting and singing war songs while holding AK-47 rifles and other weapons. One of the militants accused the Martin Amaewhule-led 27 lawmakers of attempting to destabilize the state and create grounds for a state of emergency. He stated that the group is deeply concerned about developments in Rivers State, particularly the ultimatum given to Governor Siminalayi Fubara to present the 2025 budget within 48 hours.
The group urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and prevent what they described as an attempt by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and his allies to drag Rivers State into a crisis.
Elder statesman and former Minister of Transportation, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, has called on President Tinubu to support Fubara, emphasizing that the Ijaw nation has waited 24 years for an opportunity to produce the state governor. Sekibo commended Fubara’s governance, stating that he has prioritized the interests of Rivers people and demonstrated commitment to national unity. Speaking at the commissioning of the remodeled Borokiri Fire Service Station and Firefighting vehicles in Port Harcourt, Sekibo expressed confidence that Rivers residents stand with the president.
In a separate development, former Andoni Local Council Chairman, Imie Benson Alpheaus, has resumed office following a February 28 Court of Appeal judgment that reinstated him and other elected officials. Alpheaus, who was initially sacked by a High Court ruling, expressed gratitude to the judiciary for restoring his mandate after a decade-long legal battle.
During his reinstatement speech on March 3, 2025, Alpheaus outlined his vision for the council, focusing on commerce, industry, investment, and tourism to enhance peace, security, and economic growth. He reassured the people of Andoni that his administration would be law-abiding and committed to reclaiming lost democratic dividends.
As part of his immediate actions, Alpheaus announced the dissolution of all local council appointees, including standing and sitting committees established by previous administrations. He pledged to implement new policies and programs aimed at human and capital development for the benefit of the people.
