The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has raised concerns over an alleged plot by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and security agencies to arrest Hon. Ugochinyere Michael Ikeagwuonu, the lawmaker representing Ideato Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. CUPP made this claim in a statement issued on Thursday after a press conference in Abuja.
According to CUPP, the alleged scheme is a grave threat to democracy, aimed at discrediting Ugochinyere, who is described as one of Nigeria’s most outspoken and incorruptible opposition leaders. The coalition further accused a pro-Wike faction and certain security agencies of training fake witnesses for over six weeks in an attempt to fabricate false testimony against the lawmaker.
In their statement, CUPP dismissed the alleged plot as a “desperate, low-budget Nollywood production” and emphasized that Ugochinyere’s commitment to truth and transparency could not be silenced by intimidation, blackmail, or fabricated charges.
The coalition also revealed plans to organize nationwide protests in resistance to the alleged plot. However, at the time of reporting, neither Wike’s spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, nor Nigerian security agencies had responded to the allegations.
Ugochinyere has been a vocal critic of Wike, particularly regarding his role in the ongoing crisis within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
