Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, have clarified details of their recent meeting in Adamawa State, dispelling rumors of a political alliance ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Context of the Meeting
The meeting took place during the 20th anniversary and 16th Founder’s Day celebration of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), founded by Atiku Abubakar. Peter Obi attended the event as a keynote speaker.
Atiku’s spokesperson, Paul Ibe, explained that the gathering was rooted in camaraderie, emphasizing that their relationship transcends politics. “Atiku invited Obi for breakfast before attending the AUN event. It was not politically motivated,” Ibe stated.
Ibrahim Umar, Obi’s media aide, reinforced the sentiment, dismissing political speculation. “The invitation was solely for the AUN celebration. People will always assume, but there was no political agenda,” Umar clarified.
The meeting stirred speculation on social media, with many suggesting a potential collaboration for the 2027 presidential election. However, both camps have firmly denied such claims, focusing instead on the significance of the AUN event.
