The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has called for the official resignation of Governor Monday Okpebholo and his Deputy, Dennis Idahosa, from their positions in the National Assembly. PDP’s caretaker committee chairman, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, criticized the pair for failing to vacate their seats in the Senate and House of Representatives, which he argued was in violation of the 1999 Constitution.
Aziegbemi stated that their failure to resign within two weeks of their inauguration as Governor and Deputy Governor was depriving their constituencies of adequate representation. He emphasized that, according to Section 68(1)d of the Constitution, public office holders in such roles must vacate their legislative seats upon assuming executive positions.
In response, Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, accused the PDP of ignorance, clarifying that vacant seats are officially declared by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House when National Assembly members are elevated to executive roles. He urged Edo citizens to disregard the PDP’s claims.
