Dr. Eddy Olafeso, the Director General of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Council for the Ondo State governorship election, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using nearly N20 billion in state funds to manipulate the election results.
In an interview with our correspondent, Olafeso expressed deep dissatisfaction with the conduct of the election, which saw the PDP lose to the APC. He described the election as a “charade” and accused the APC of resorting to extreme vote-buying tactics, using public money for electoral advantage.
Olafeso emphasized that the APC’s financial manipulation exploited the state’s resources to win the election, adding that the impact of this practice on the electorate—many of whom are struggling with poverty—was a significant factor in the PDP’s loss. He said, “The vote buying has acquired a new dimension… almost N20bn of state money was laid out for an election… Poverty was weaponized for election manipulation.”
Addressing questions on the PDP’s failure to counter the APC’s financial power, Olafeso pointed out the stark contrast in approach. While the PDP focused on logistical support for voters, including helping with transportation to polling units, the APC used public funds to outspend the opposition. He lamented that the financial tactics employed by the APC rendered the PDP’s efforts inadequate.
Despite claims of vote-buying and widespread electoral malpractice, Olafeso denied that the PDP engaged in similar practices, despite reports of vote-buying at various polling units. He noted that the police failed to take appropriate action when such violations were reported.
Olafeso also dismissed claims that the PDP’s internal divisions contributed to the loss, stressing that the campaign had a unified front, with the party’s leadership and regional governors standing together.
Looking ahead, Olafeso remains hopeful for justice and indicated that the PDP plans to challenge the election results in court. “We are very hopeful of justice,” he said, emphasizing that the party would continue to seek accountability for what they believe was an unfair election process.
