Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Olayemi Cardoso has outlined an ambitious strategy to increase diaspora remittances from $600 million to $1 billion monthly. This goal aims to address Nigeria’s foreign exchange challenges and harness the potential of Nigerians living abroad to support the nation’s economic revival.
During a media briefing at the conclusion of the 2024 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund-World Bank in Washington, D.C., Cardoso emphasized the importance of remittances in stabilizing the economy and boosting foreign reserves. He revealed plans to simplify remittance processes, reduce transfer costs, and encourage investments from the diaspora into Nigerian projects.
To achieve this vision, the CBN will introduce policies designed to create a seamless and secure channel for Nigerians abroad to invest back home, fostering trust and long-term economic support. Cardoso highlighted recent discussions with international money transfer operators (IMTOs) to address challenges that hinder remittance flows and announced the launch of the NIBBS Non-Resident Accounts Programme in collaboration with Nigerian banks.
In addition to focusing on remittances, Cardoso discussed Nigeria’s broader economic environment, acknowledging the risks of inflation and the necessity for careful interest rate management. He also addressed the country’s efforts to exit the FATF grey list, which is vital for enhancing Nigeria’s global financial standing and investor confidence.
The CBN’s recapitalization policy aims to strengthen the financial positions of deposit money banks by March 2026, supporting Nigeria’s aspiration to become a $1 trillion economy by 2030. Cardoso reiterated the bank’s commitment to orthodox monetary policy and collaboration with fiscal authorities to drive actionable outcomes for economic stability and growth.
With these measures, Cardoso expressed confidence in transforming discussions from the meetings into tangible results, paving the way for a prosperous and inclusive Nigeria.
