Rabiu Kwankwaso, former New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate and ex-Governor of Kano State, expressed dismay over the widespread power outages in Northern Nigeria. According to Kwankwaso, vandalism has left many areas in “total darkness,” and the high cost of fuel is worsening the situation, impacting homes and businesses alike.
Kwankwaso shared his concerns on X, noting that the 330kV Shiroro-Kaduna power line, vital for regions including Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, and Gombe, has been disrupted due to vandalism. As a result, both households and industries struggle with electricity shortages and rising fuel prices.
He emphasized the urgent need to explore alternative power solutions to address Nigeria’s energy needs, pointing to the nation’s vast untapped resources. Kwankwaso encouraged state governments and private investors to invest in alternative electricity sources, citing Kano’s investment in turbines at Challawa Gorge and Tiga Dams as examples of sustainable development.
This situation, Kwankwaso argued, underscores the capacity deficit in Nigeria’s power sector and the need for rapid improvement to prevent future disruptions.
