Japa: Why I Returned to Nigeria After 25 Years in the US — Dr. Julius Oni

-

Dr. Julius Oni, a Nigerian associate professor of orthopaedic surgery, has made headlines by relocating to Nigeria after spending 25 years in the United States. In a viral video, Oni explained his decision to “reverse Japa” — a Nigerian term for fleeing abroad in search of better opportunities. He shared, “I reverse Japa from the U.S. to Nigeria six weeks ago.”

Oni’s move included taking a leave of absence from his position at Johns Hopkins University, selling his house and cars, and relocating with his wife and children to fulfill his mission of transforming healthcare in Nigeria. He expressed his conviction, stating, “I know at this point some of you may call me delusional or even crazy, but I’m neither. I’m just a man full of conviction.”

Commitment to Healthcare Transformation

As a leader in his field, Oni is determined to ensure that Nigerians have access to world-class healthcare. “I happen to believe that Nigerian patients deserve great care too,” he emphasized. To support this mission, he launched DOC Medical Nigeria, a facility dedicated to providing high-quality musculoskeletal care.

His initiative aims to minimize the need for patients to travel abroad for orthopaedic surgery. “Part of my effort is to provide access to care so that people do not have to travel to access high-quality orthopaedic surgery,” he explained.

Positive Impact and Early Success

Oni reports that his efforts are already bearing fruit, with patients traveling from nearby countries like Ghana and even from as far as the UK for treatment. “I am humbled to say that people are coming from near and far,” he said, highlighting the growing demand for his services. Many patients who would have otherwise gone overseas for surgery now have access to top-tier orthopaedic care within Nigeria.

In his video, Oni celebrated some of his recent accomplishments since establishing DOC Medical Nigeria, including performing his first series of surgeries and hosting free medical clinics in collaboration with other organizations. He has also consulted with patients outside Nigeria, showcasing the reach of his expertise.

Dr. Oni’s return to Nigeria underscores a broader trend of healthcare professionals seeking to contribute to their home country’s medical landscape, emphasizing the importance of accessible, high-quality care for all Nigerians.
