The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reported a substantial recovery of N280,389,068.08 from forfeited assets in August 2024, as detailed in its latest narcotics operations report.
Titled ‘War on Narcotics,’ the report highlights significant achievements, including the arrest of 1,821 individuals—comprising 1,640 males and 181 females—and the seizure of 142,291.3 kg of various drugs. The agency successfully charged 415 suspects, leading to 414 convictions and asset forfeitures, and destroyed 49.63 hectares of cannabis farms.
In efforts to combat drug demand, 949 individuals received treatment and rehabilitation, while 338 public enlightenment activities were conducted.
The NDLEA, established by Decree No. 48 on December 29, 1989, has made notable strides, including the apprehension of two major drug barons: Alhaji Sulaiman Jimoh, known as Temo, in Mushin, Lagos, and Alhaji Suleman Ganiu Aremu, detained for cocaine trafficking in Saudi Arabia.
The agency’s report emphasized the recovery of N280,389,068.08 and highlighted a recent workshop aimed at enhancing its Alternative Development Programme. This initiative focuses on preventing illicit crop production by improving rural development through better education, health, and infrastructure.
Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), Chairman/CEO of NDLEA, announced ongoing training for Marine Command officers in advanced diving techniques to strengthen efforts against drug trafficking. He asserted the agency’s commitment to staying ahead of drug cartels to safeguard Nigeria from illicit drug smuggling.
