The Nigeria Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) has launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing transparency within the construction sector by developing a comprehensive cost databank. This announcement was made by Mr. Kene C. Nzekwe, the President of NIQS, during a National Workshop themed, “Innovative and Sustainable Construction Practices – Building a Resilient Cost-Based and Knowledge-Driven Industry with Integrity.”
Nzekwe emphasized that the workshop’s theme was deliberately chosen to underscore the critical importance of knowledge, integrity, and innovation in building a sustainable construction industry, which is essential for the nation’s overall resilience.
“The upcoming cost databank will play a vital role in promoting transparency and accountability in the construction industry,” Nzekwe stated. “It will enable effective monitoring and regulation of construction costs across various levels—local, state, and federal. Our aim is to ensure that every Naira allocated to construction projects is carefully accounted for, guaranteeing consistent value for money.”
During his speech, Nzekwe urged the government to involve quantity surveyors in all national construction projects. “To ensure accountability and the implementation of necessary checks and balances, it is essential that quantity surveyors are engaged in every aspect of construction. This will help in the prudent management of our national resources and ensure that development objectives are met with integrity and professionalism.”
He also highlighted the vital role that quantity surveyors play in construction projects across different sectors, including civil engineering, building, heavy engineering, and industrial development. “Our profession is rooted in principles of financial accountability. Quantity surveyors are uniquely positioned to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with the highest standards of efficiency and sustainability.”
