The Plateau State Command has arrested 14 individuals for violating the 24-hour curfew imposed in Jos and surrounding areas. The curfew was enacted in response to violence and looting by some protesters in the Jos North Local Government Area.
State Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Adesina announced the arrests following a State Security Council meeting on Monday in Jos.
Adesina explained that the curfew was necessitated by miscreants who hijacked initially peaceful protests. “The nationwide protest in the state was peaceful until yesterday when some miscreants began looting public and private properties,” Adesina stated. “The state government immediately imposed a curfew to control these activities, and it remains in effect.”
He further emphasized that the curfew would be strictly enforced, warning, “We have already arrested 14 violators and urge residents to stay indoors until the curfew is reviewed by the government.”
Brigadier General Gakji Shipi (retired), the governor’s Special Adviser on Security, appealed to residents to maintain peace. “This government is committed to ensuring peace in Plateau, but some individuals continue to tarnish our image. We urge all citizens to reject violence and seek peaceful coexistence,” Shipi said. “The government will continue to support security agencies in their efforts to maintain a peaceful Plateau.”
The security meeting was presided over by Governor Caleb Mutfwang.
