Former Super Falcons player Stella Mbachu has expressed her belief that Nigeria’s senior women’s football team were unfortunate to be eliminated in the group stage of the women’s football event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.
The team, managed by Randy Waldrum, ended their campaign with a 3-1 loss to Japan in their final Group C match on Wednesday, failing to advance after losing all three group games.
Placed in a challenging group with Spain, Brazil, and Japan, the Falcons faced an uphill battle. Their campaign began with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Brazil. In their second match against Spain, they showed improvement but were ultimately undone by a late goal from Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas, which secured a 1-0 victory for the Spaniards.
In their last group match against Japan, Nigeria fell behind 2-0 early, but Jeniffer Echegini’s spectacular goal pulled them back to 2-1. Despite the effort, the Falcons couldn’t recover from their early deficit.
Mbachu, who earned 88 caps and scored 20 goals for Nigeria, commented on the team’s performance, stating, “Even with the losses, they performed admirably; it was just unfortunate.” She added, “I don’t believe they made any mistakes; they gave their best effort.”
In the closing moments of the match, Tosin Demehin was adversely affected by a contentious decision from Venezuelan referee Emikar Calderas, who awarded a free kick to Japan. Hikaru Kitagawa converted the set piece, sealing Nigeria’s fate with a third goal.
Mbachu’s remarks underscore the Falcons’ challenging tournament experience and highlight their spirited performance despite the unfavorable outcomes.
